Gamer´s thumb, or tenosynovitis as it´s also known, is a condition in which the tendons that move your thumb become inflamed. Despite the name, it can also affect your wrists and other muscles on your body.
Carpal tunnel is slightly different, it happens when the median nerve between the hand and the forearm gets pinched by the inflamed tissue that surrounds it, sending a near-constant pain signal to the brain.
While both these afflictions are different, they have the same root cause, swollen or inflamed muscles on your hands and wrists. They are no joke, if you have any of the aforementioned symptoms, you should consider going to the doctor before you are unable to keep using a mouse and keyboard .

How To Treat Wrist Pain
The first step is to stop doing any exercise that irritates the wrist. “You’ve got to cut off the inflammation and any further damage from occurring,” says Mostoff.
To help your wrists heal, Mostoff recommends applying ice to the area daily, and gently massaging the muscles in the forearm to reduce tension. You might also consider wearing wrist splints to take pressure off the joints, he adds.
While the pain persists, avoid doing any stretches that put the wrist in a bent position . But once the inflammation has calmed down, stretching the forearms is another way to help release tension: “Bend the wrist up while keeping the arm and elbow straight and hold for 30 to 60 seconds,” Mostoff says. “Reverse the motion and bend the wrist down and hold for another 30 to 60 seconds.” To deepen the stretch, use the opposite hand to pull gently on your fingers.
Once you’re ready to get back to your strength training routine, you can protect your wrists by wrapping them with athletic tape or wearing a wrist strap. Also make sure you always maintain a neutral wrist position. “For example, if you’re doing bicep curls, make sure your wrist is completely straight as you curl the weight towards your body,” Mostoff says. “If you’re doing push-ups, use parallel bars or do the push-up on your knuckles so your wrists are straight while you perform the exercise,” he adds.

Ways To Reduce Hand And Wrist Pain
In addition to life being better when youre not in pain, its important to take steps to prevent that potential occurrence too. Luckily, there are numerous actions you can take to prevent your hand and wrist pain from worsening.

What To Expect From Your Doctor
First, your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history and perform a physical exam. During your physical exam, your doctor will examine your wrist for swelling, pain, and tenderness. The location of the swelling can tell your doctor which wrist joints are most affected. Problems in the wrist can affect peripheral tendons, causing tendonitis.
Next, your doctor will examine the range of motion of the wrist itself. This can show how mild or severe the arthritis is, or if you have carpal tunnel syndrome. Our forearm and hand muscles actually have a great potential for strength improvement, as again most of us tend not to use them to their full capability.

Hand And Wrist Stretches
;A physical therapist, occupational therapist, or certified hand therapist can teach you exercises which you can learn to do on your own. Nerve and tendon gliding exercises have been shown to be helpful in carpal tunnel syndrome. Simple exercises I have found helpful are stretches which involve the fingers and wrist, pulling them back into extension and holding the stretch for 20 seconds, then relaxing. This can be repeated for up to 5 minutes per session, 2-3 times per day. This stretch shouldnt be painful or done with excessive force. Therapists can also do therapeutic ultrasound and iontophoresis treatments which can help reduce symptoms.

Wrist Pain After A Fall

Dont ignore wrist pain that occurs after a fall, as it could result from a stress fracture of the radial bone.
This occurs more commonly with a history of osteoporosis, but it can occur in normal bone, Mikulsky says.
If the pain is constant in the wrist and does not change with motion, seeking imaging to rule out a fracture may be necessary, she adds.
