Is ice good for carpal tunnel syndrome?

Researchers have found that a previous wrist fracture and the use of insulin, metformin, and sulphonylureas are associated with a higher chance of CTS. Smoking, hormone replacement therapy , the combined oral contraceptive pill, and oral corticosteroids did not appear to be not linked to a higher risk of CTS.

One study has suggested that obesity, combined with a square-shaped wrist shape, may increase the likelihood of CTS developing. However, the team concluded that obesity was probably not the cause, because when participants with obesity lost weight, they continued to have CTS.

The same team concluded in other research that the age of women at the menopause might be a factor, and that pregnancy-related hormones may increase the risk of CTS in women at the time of the menopause.

Postmenopausal women who use aromatase inhibitor drugs for breast cancer often experience CTS.

Apart from work-related factors, the main risk for CTS is inflammatory arthritis, but hypothyroidism and diabetes also appear to increase the chance of developing it, according to research published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says that CTS is three times more likely to occur among people working in assembly operations than in data-entry personnel.

However, the risk factors are so diverse that nearly everybody has one or more of them at some point in their lives.

    Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause numbness, stiffness, and pain in the fingers and hand. There is no known way to prevent carpal tunnel, but some exercises can reduce your chances of experiencing symptoms.

    We spoke with John DiBlasio, MPT, DPT, CSCS, a Vermont-based physical therapist, for exercise suggestions.

    Here are three basic moves you can do any time of day. These stretches and exercises are simple and dont require any equipment. You can easily do them at your desk, while waiting in line, or whenever you have a minute or two to spare.

    Problems like carpal tunnel are best addressed with stretches done throughout the day, says Dr. DiBlasio. Protect your wrists in just a few minutes a day with these easy movements.

    Remember that nursery rhyme from when you were a kid? Turns out its a great stretch for your hands:

  • Start with your fingertips touching and pointing down toward the floor.
  • Spread fingers apart as far you can, then steeple the fingers by separating palms of hands but keeping fingers together.

    Diagnosing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

    When visiting your doctor with hand pain or symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, he or she may perform various tests and measures to confirm your diagnosis and to rule out other problems that may cause symptoms that are similar to CTS. Diagnostic tests that may be ordered to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome may include:

    • Electromyography
    • MRI
    • CT scan

    The EMG test is considered the gold standard for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome. During this exam, small needles are inserted into areas of your neck, arm, and hand. Small electrical shocks are transmitted through the needles, and the speed at which those electrical signals travel through your median nerve help to diagnose CTS. If there is slowing of the electrical signal as it crosses through the carpal tunnel via your median nerve, carpal tunnel syndrome is typically diagnosed.

    Your doctor will also make note of your symptoms and their behavior and may take measurements of your grip and fine motor strength. Your wrist and finger range of motion may also be measured. The results of diagnostic testing combined with your subjective complaints and objective measures can help confirm the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

    Sometimes, you may have hand pain, tingling, or weakness caused by a different problem. Other conditions that may cause symptoms similar to CTS may include:

    • Cervical radiculopathy

    Increase Nerves Ability To Slide Through

    After the symptom-inducing activities and the irritation to the region of compression have stopped, we can start getting the nerve to glide freely. This can be done with nerve gliding techniques, or wait for it by moving your body.

    Thats right! The body is a beautiful thing. When it moves optimally, nothing will pinch, crush, ache, or go numb. Normally, we start with some nerve sliding exercises in this phase and increase the amount of motion the person is doing. Isolated nerve gliding exercises are very helpful for enforcing more nerve slide through a stuck section.

    Moving the nerve after its had pressure on it, is super important if you are to return to normal function again. Moving the nerve amongst the muscles and joints helps the nerve break free from other entrapment locations as well. Nerve movement happens as you play with your body again. Simple.

    From here on out, the rehab starts to blend with phase 5.

    Chapter 1: Start Playing In Sand Or Rice

    Playing in the sand can be an extremely beneficial, therapeutic exercise for an ulnar nerve issue in the elbow and/or hand. It is venturing toward the side of active care, but its extremely generic and can often help in deconditioned people.

    This type of hand/wrist therapy is actually kind of fun too! Grab some kind of box and fill it up with sand.

    Put a bunch of small, random household items in the sand and mix up the contents so that most of the objects need to be dug out.

    Get your hand in there and start searching for the items in the sand, moving the hand around from the wrist and not from the shoulder and pull the items out one by one as you find them.

    Or if you dont mind an activity thats less entertaining, you can get right down to it with Rice Grabs which work extremely well.

    There are a couple ways that this can help you.

    First, the resistance that the sand provides for the hand and wrist as you search for the items, will help in the rehab.

    Second, you may not know it, but you are actually gliding the nerve through the Tunnel of Guyon when you do this. There is a saying that we use in our field: Movement is Medicine. This rehab technique is a perfect example of that. This type of hand therapy is often performed at physical therapy or occupational therapy facilities with sand and small objects within the sand. The difference we suggest is with the intensity it is performed.

    When To Use Heat

    Should I use Ice or Heat for Carpal Tunnel Hand Pain?

    Heat therapys ability to increase blood flow and loosen muscles makes it a good choice to use before physical activity. It can also increase the effectiveness of carpal tunnel exercises if used before hand and make muscles more pliable for massage techniques. Otherwise, use heat therapy sparingly when treating carpal tunnel syndrome to avoid unwanted side effects.

    Tips for Using Heat Therapy

    Heat therapy should be used in moderation when treating carpal tunnel syndrome as the increased blood flow and exacerbate inflammation. Be sure to follow these guidelines when using heat therapy:

    • Never apply heat therapy to a wrist that is visibly red or swollen.
    • Apply for 20 to 60 minutes per session, depending on the severity of your symptoms.
    • Dont use heat therapy on a new wound or recent pull.
    • To avoid skin irritation or burns, avoid heat therapy while sleeping.
    • Try using simple self massage techniques with heat.
